Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Are you suffering from a sharp pain in your lower back whenever you stand up from a chair? This could happen due to a problem in your sacroiliac joint. Visit your physicians, Dr. Quinones of Virgin Island Orthopaedics and Medical Specialists, to learn more about our orthopedic services in St. Thomas, and St. Croix.

What is the sacroiliac joint?

The sacroiliac joints, also called the SI joints, are two identical joints located on each side of your spine. The two joints are responsible for carrying your upper body’s weight when you are standing or walking and shifting that load to your legs.

What are the causes of sacroiliac joint pain?

The pain starts when there is an abnormality in the surrounding ligaments and they become too loose or too tight. The following are some reasons you may suffer from this abnormality:

  • Falling down
  • Playing sports and heavy exercises
  • Activity that gives the area regular pounding
  • Having an uneven movement in the pelvis
  • Having an autoimmune disease that affects your joints
  • Wearing a boot after having foot or ankle surgery
  • Wearing non-supportive footwear

What are the symptoms of sacroiliac joint pain?

The symptoms usually start with lower back and buttock pain. The pain may then spread to your lower hip, groin, and upper thigh. Numbness or tingling in the leg can also be present. The sacroiliac joint pain will reach its peak when you change your body position like standing up, sitting down, walking, or climbing stairs.

What are the treatment options?

After evaluating your case and making the correct diagnosis, your physicians will decide the treatment plan that suits you the most. If the cause of your condition is a specific activity, your physician will ask you to stop doing it. Physical therapy, cortisone injections, and nerve treatment are some effective non-surgical treatments. For severe cases that don’t improve after trying the non-surgical measures, your St. Thomas, and St. Croix, physicians may recommend an orthopaedic surgery.
