Heart Rhythm Conditions

Our cardiology doctor at Virgin Islands Orthopaedics and Medical Specialists practice in St. Croix, St. Thomas, and Tortola Virgin Islands explains what happens when your heart pattern is irregular. Heart conditions can affect any part of the heart, such as the valves, nodes, and chambers.

Disruptions in any part of your heart cause your heart pattern to change its rate or rhythm. You may or may not feel any signs of a changed heart pattern. Abnormal heart patterns may present the following.

  • Chest pain
  • Heart palpitations/fluttering
  • Shortness of breath
  • Faint/lightheadedness/dizzy
  • Pale skin color
  • Sweating
  • Fatigue

When you experience any symptoms, they can be scary. Symptoms could be nothing at all, or they may require the attention of our cardiologist. The following are common abnormal heart rhythms.

  • Tachycardia happens when your heart rate speeds up and beats too fast. You could have tachycardia if your relaxing heart rate is 100 beats/minute.
  • Atrial Fibrillation pattern occurs in the upper heart chambers and is common when unstable electrical impulses misfire. Your heart will feel like it is quivering. A typical heart rate is 60-80 beats/minute. AFib causes your heart rate to increase from 80-180 per minute.
  • Atrial Flutter is an irregular pattern affecting one of two heart chambers, resulting in a rapid atrial rhythm, although your heart pattern can remain regular, however fast.
  • Bradycardia occurs when electrical signals from the atrium to the ventricles are disrupted, causing your heart to beat less than 60 beats/minute.

Prime athletes can have bradycardia because their heart is in excellent shape. However, a slower-than-average heart rate can occur because of specific medications/hypothyroidism/hypothermia.

  • Ventricular Fibrillation is life-threatening as the ventricles of your heart are beating fast and grossly irregular. When this pattern happens, it can cause a heart attack. Immediate defibrillation is necessary to restore your heart's pattern to a regular cycle.
  • Premature Atrium or Ventricle Contractions cause your heart to beat too early. You may feel your heart skip a beat or pause for a second.
