Commonly Asked Questions About Pacemakers in Saint Croix and Saint Thomas

Getting a pacemaker can seem scary and intimidating, but the following questions and answers can help.

What Exactly Is a Pacemaker and How Does It Work?

Pacemakers are tiny devices implanted in your chest to help your heart beat properly. It has wires that monitor your heart rate. If your heart rate skips a beat or slows, the device sends an electrical pulse to get it back on track.

Will I Feel It Working?

The only thing you might feel is some soreness after it’s implanted. Other than that, you should not feel any sensations while it’s working. You should, however, feel an increase in your heart rate when you’re active, as your pacemaker responds to your level of activity.

Does the Procedure Hurt?

For most people, there is nothing more than minor discomfort. It typically requires only local anesthesia, but sedation is available, if necessary.

Will It Be Visible to Others?

Pacemakers are very small. You might notice a slight rise in your skin, depending on your weight and the tightness of your skin. However, it’s typically not visible to others, especially underneath clothing.

Will Appliances Interfere With My Pacemaker?

There is a common theory that normal household appliances will interfere with pacemakers. However, this is not usually the case. You can use regular appliances, such as microwaves, hairdryers, computers, and other appliances and devices just as you would without a pacemaker. If anything should be avoided, your doctor at Virgin Islands Orthopaedics & Medical Specialists will let you know.

Will I Have to Avoid Any Activities With a Pacemaker?

Under most circumstances, you’ll be able to go back to the same activities you enjoyed before you got your device. In fact, you might enjoy them even more, as you’ll know your heart is getting the support it needs. This includes exercise, sexual activity, and more.

To be safe, however, it’s always important to ask your doctor if there is anything you should avoid, especially right after your implant. In some cases, they might advise you to hold off on exercise and travel for a short time.
